'Outstanding': Jamie Carragher amazed by 21-year-old Liverpool player's second-half display against Man United

Jamie Carragher suggested that one Liverpool player was outstanding during the second-half of their draw with Manchester United on Sunday.

The Reds must be wondering how exactly that they did not win at Old Trafford and go back to the top of the Premier League table.

But in the end, Jurgen Klopp’s men needed a late penalty from Mohamed Salah to salvage a point after United managed to turn the game around in the second-half.

Liverpool were punished for not making the most of their sheer dominance in the first-half. They lacked composure in the final third on a number of occasions. But the changes Klopp made at 2-1 down helped wrestle the momentum back in the visitors’ favour.

Harvey Elliott was one of those who made a real impact. The 21-year-old won the penalty which allowed Salah to equalise, drawing Aaron Wan-Bissaka into making a rash challenge inside the area.

And as the full-time whistle loomed, Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports (broadcast on 7/4; 17:16) that he was really impressed by the youngster’s performance off the bench.

“Harvey Elliott’s been outstanding again. So often this season he’s made a difference from the bench. And he’s done it here again with the penalty. Every time he gets the ball, it looks like he can create something,” he said.

Jurgen Klopp left with plenty to ponder

Elliott’s time to be a key player in the Reds’ side will come. It is remarkable how much football he has already played in his career – particularly when you consider that he was sidelined for a long time with a serious injury.

Liverpool are so blessed with how much quality they have in the final third. And Elliott is at his best out wide on the right, which is Mohamed Salah’s position.

Ultimately, this role appears to be getting the very best out of the England under-21 international right now.

But if his teammates struggle to kill games off again, Elliott’s performances off the bench will certainly leave Klopp with some real food for thought.
