Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo will take the credit, but £19m star was 'exceptional' vs Liverpool - opinion

Manchester United drew 2-2 with Liverpool in the Premier League… somehow.

After what was a first-half from the Theatre of Nightmares, two wonder goals from Bruno Fernandes and academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo remarkably put the Red Devils in the ascendancy.

But then a Mohamed Salah penalty after a silly Aaron Wan-Bissaka challenge made sure the points were shared on the night. The goals were both stunners from Bruno and Kobbie, and they take the credit for United ultimately obtaining even at least a point on the night.

There were a few particularly impressive players for Erik ten Hag‘s side. Harry Maguire and Willy Kambwala were both ace – however, we’d like to pay homage to another defender who was simply inspired against Liverpool.

Diogo Dalot deserves immense credit for Liverpool performance

Diogo Dalot, as he has been many times already this season, was superb for Manchester United.

Given his rare disaster of a performance against Chelsea, Dalot simply needed to come out against Jurgen Klopp’s side and put in a good performance to regain Manchester United fans’ trust. He did just that.

Going forward, he was one of the only United players that could seriously carry the ball. He was the catalyst for most of the few United attacks formulated.

Dalot also, apart from the goal which wasn’t his fault, kept the tricky Columbian in Luis Diaz quiet. He often won his duels against him.

Don’t just take our word for it, Rio Ferdinand also spoke highly of the defender. “Dalot I thought was exceptional at times as well”, Rio told his YouTube channel.

His quality performance is reflected in his stats for the game:

  • 90 minutes played
  • 37/41 pass accuracy (90%)
  • 57 touches
  • 1/1 successful dribbles (100%)
  • 0 times dispossessed
  • 1 block
  • 8 defensive actions
  • 7 duels won
  • 3 duels lost
  • 1 interception

Class. As per usual, it seems this campaign.

Gary Neville says Diogo Dalot is Manchester United’s Player of the Season

With the season trickling slowly to an end, the topic of the Player of the Year Award is set to come up – and we can think of anyone more deserving than the Portuguese defender.

The £19m man has really come into his own, to which Gary Neville agreed. Speaking on Sky Sports commentary in the first half, the United legend said Dalot had been United’s ‘most consistent player this season’, with Mainoo a close second.

Dalot is proving all his doubters wrong once again. Long may it continue.
