The South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team completed their quest for perfection on Sunday, finishing with an unblemished record of 38-0 overall. They defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes with a score of 87-75 on Sunday evening, thanks to another spectacular performance from the National Championship game MVP, Kamilla Cardoso. To celebrate the Gamecocks, perfect season, Under Armour decided to release a special ad.

South Carolina etched their place in women’s basketball history

Cardoso delivered a performance that Gamecock fans won’t soon forget, stuffing the stat sheet with 15 points, 17 rebounds, and two assists. She’s carried South Carolina on her back all season long and it’s only fitting that she delivered an MVP performance in completing their perfect season.

They finished with an unblemished 38-0 overall record, becoming the first women’s basketball team to do so since UConn did it in 2016. Caitlin Clark led the Hawkeyes with 30 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and dishing out five assists. While she finished her college basketball career with a loss, Clark managed to make it to back-to-back national title games. She’s also one of the most decorated players in the history of women’s basketball.

South Carolina dominated Iowa on the glass on Sunday, outrebounding them 51-29. The Gamecocks also connected on 8 of their 19 three-pointers (42.1%). They also shot better than Iowa from the field, drilling 35 of 73 shots (47.9%).

South Carolina was trailing Iowa 27-20 at the end of the first quarter, but they battled back and took control of the game by the end of the third quarter. Then they didn’t have to sweat anything out in the final minutes as they counted down to becoming a part of women’s basketball history.

The Gamecocks thoroughly dominated their competition in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, with their toughest games coming against Iowa and Indiana. Their Sweet 16 matchup with Indiana was particularly nerve wracking down the stretch. The Hoosiers cut the Gamecocks lead to 74-72 with 1:08 left in the fourth quarter. But that was as close as it would get as the No. 1 overall seed survived a scare.

Dawn Staley has now won three national titles with South Carolina (2017, 2022, and 2024). There’s no question she’s already cemented her spot in the women’s basketball Hall of Fame, whenever she decides to hang up the whistle. The Gamecocks program only continues to further cement their status as one of the best in women’s basketball history.
