'Hope I'm wrong': Gary Lineker thinks he knows what's about to happen to Chris Wood at Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood is a man in blistering form at the moment – but now a leading pundit is fearing the worst for the New Zealand international.

The 32-year-old took his tally for the 2023/24 campaign to 13 goals in all competitions, with an equalising goal for Forest in a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham yesterday.

Wood signed for Forest from Newcastle for £15 million in January 2023. He initially came on a loan deal but that was made permanent after the player had made three starts for the club.

Last season was a bit of a poor one for Wood at Forest. He was actually injured at Tottenham in March of last season and was ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

With Taiwo Awoniyi injured for a lot of this season, Wood has needed to step up in his absence at the City Ground. He’s done that extremely well and yesterday was the fourth game in succession that he’s managed to score.

Yesterday, things could have been so different. Wood missed a golden chance just after he’d equalised to putForest in front but his effort cannoned off the post when it seemed easier to score.

What Gary Lineker has said about Forest striker Chris Wood

Well, on the latest episode of The Rest is Football, Lineker spoke about Wood and his miss in the defeat for Forest at Tottenham – and he thinks this could be seriously detrimental.

Although Wood is still bang in form, Lineker believes that the Forest man could suffer something of a hangover from this moment from yesterday’s game with Tottenham.

He said on The Rest is Football: “Why was he trying to break the back of the net. He couldn’t miss it if he just dinked it.

“Do you know what will happen now, because he has been on a brilliant run of form, when something like that happens from my experiences you tend to go on a bad run.

“He will be thinking tonight ‘how?’ And it can affect your confidence. I hope I am wrong!”

Wood can bounce back from this

Sometimes things can just be too easy from the perspective of an in-form striker. Ultimately, that’s what happened yesterday and Wood has tried to make sure and simply fluffed his lines.

It’s hard for us to be too critical on Wood. Without his goals this season, Forest would barely be treading water in the Premier League and they have a chance thanks to his good moments.

As an experienced member of the dressing room, we anticipate that Wood will quickly bounce back from this error and continue firing Forest towards safety this season.

Awoniyi was in place on the bench at the game yesterday but he wasn’t involved in the matchday squad.

It’s not clear when his return will come and Forest need to hope that Lineker is wrong here and Wood continues to score goals for the team.
