What Chelsea did for the first time in 24 years after 2-2 draw with Sheffield United

Chelsea’s game against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane yesterday finished 2-2, and that draw was quite a significant one for them.

Really, the match should never have finished level. Chelsea should have entered the fixture with a real buzz after beating Manchester United 4-3.

However, that never happened and if it were not for a corner, which Thiago Silva scored from, Mauricio Pochettino‘s men would have went into half-time without scoring.

Silva’s goal was cancelled out by Jayden Bogle, but Chelsea still looked like they were heading to victory after Noni Madueke restored the Blues’ lead.

Sheffield United managed to equalise again, though, with Oli McBurnie scoring in the 93rd minute.

Why Chelsea’s draw with Sheffield United was significant

It is quite clear to see, then, that yesterday’s game against the Blades is one that Chelsea should have won.

Having failed to do so and with the fixture finishing level, it means the Blues have now drawn their last three away matches in the Premier League.

According to BBC Sport, that is something that the club have not done since 2000.

Pochettino’s side will not have to worry about a fourth successive away draw in the top flight next Monday, as they take on Everton at Stamford Bridge.

After that, they face Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Why are Chelsea drawing so many games?

It is a simple answer really. They are conceding way too many goals.

While Chelsea were able to beat United, they still conceded three times at home. It was a match that they could have easily drawn or lost, with Pochettino’s men needing two penalties on the night to help them earn all three points.

Before that, the Blues drew 2-2 with Burnley, so it is easy to see what the problem here is.

It is something that Pochettino has to try and fix quickly. Silverware and a finish in the European spots are still possible for the club.
