Mauricio Pochettino shares why Malo Gusto was not involved for Chelsea vs Sheffield United today

Chelsea defender Malo Gusto missed his side’s trip to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United.

With Reece James spending most of the season on the sidelines because of injury, Malo Gusto has been a key player for Mauricio Pochettino.

In total, the 20-year-old has made 31 appearances for Chelsea, providing eight assists along the way.

Not having their attacking right-back did not stop the Blues from making a quick start against Sheffield United. They took an early lead thanks to Thiago Silva.

However, with James still out injured, Pochettino will hope to have Gusto back soon and has explained why he was absent in the first place.

Mauricio Pochettino explains Malo Gusto absence

Fortunately for Chelsea fans, it does not look like Gusto will be unavailable for too long.

In fact, based on Pochettino’s words, he probably should be back very soon.

Shared by Chelsea’s official app, the Argentine said: “Malo Gusto has to rest. He was ill before playing two games, so he has to rest. For us, even if we miss important players, we need to accept we cannot take a risk in this way.”

When will Malo Gusto be back?

With Gusto simply being rested, he should return for Chelsea’s next game against Everton next Monday.

The match Pochettino will be desperate for Gusto to play in, though, is the Blues’ FA Cup semi-final tie versus Manchester City.

Chelsea will need the strongest team they can put out to come out as victors, and you would have to include Gusto in that.

He has been so good going forward this season that former Chelsea player Jason Cundy has compared him to a winger.

It is not quite clear when James will return from his injury, but when the England international does, he could face a challenge getting back into the team.
