'As it stands': Chelsea are no longer considering signing £86m player - journalist

Chelsea may not end up making a move for one striker this summer despite all of the links to him.

It is likely that Chelsea will sign at least one centre-forward before the 2024/25 season starts.

They are light up top, with Nicolas Jackson the only natural option Mauricio Pochettino currently has in his squad.

On top of that, Jackson is far from being the finished article.

According to former Chelsea defender Scott Minto, the 22-year-old is not ready to lead the Blues’ line every week.

Chelsea no longer considering one of their targets

When you consider all of the above, it would be a bit of a surprise if Chelsea did not bring in a new centre-forward.

Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres was thought to have been an option on the Blues’ list.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently reported that his agent is set to have a meeting with Sporting about his future.

However, journalist Ben Jacobs has now claimed on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that the 2021 Champions League winners are not considering Gyokeres anymore “as it stands”.

Gyokeres has been in ridiculous form this season, scoring 36 goals in 42 appearances, and Sporting now want €100m (£85.8m) for their talisman, according to Jacobs.

Chelsea’s alternatives to Viktor Gyokeres

One is Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. In fact, the Nigerian has probably been Chelsea’s top target for the No.9 position all along.

It has been claimed that Osimhen is at the top of an eight-man shortlist of strikers that the club have.

It makes sense after the 25-year-old’s 2022/23 season. He scored 31 goals in all competitions for Napoli.

Chelsea have also been linked with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, so the Slovenian could be another forward option for the Blues when the transfer window opens in the summer. And who knows? Maybe Gyokeres will come back into the equation if he really is out of it at the moment.
