'Absolutely outstanding': Neil Mellor blown away by 21-year-old Liverpool man's performance at Old Trafford

Liverpool dropped points against Manchester United yesterday as they blew a host of chances to drop to second in the Premier League table.

Arsenal now lead the way on goal difference a the title race threatens to go right down to the wire.

Liverpool dominated the opening 45 minutes but a mistake from Jarrell Quansah allowed Bruno Fernandes to score a stunning equaliser. Kobbie Mainoo then scored a fine winner before Mo Salah scored from the penalty spot to ensure a point was gained.

Jurgen Klopp said after the game that he felt it was a point gained rather than two lost. But deep down, he’ll know it was a big chance to get a big win.

Of course, Liverpool missed a number of chances. The likes of Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez were guilty of big misses, which in turn, forced Klopp to his bench as he introduced the likes of Harvey Elliott.

Indeed, 21-year-old Elliott impressed when he did come on and eventually won the penalty which led to the equaliser.

And speaking about the game, former Liverpool forward Neil Mellor took time out to praise the impact Elliott has had this season.

Neil Mellor says Harvey Elliott has been outstanding for Liverpool

Mellor was giving his assessment of the game for the Official Liverpool podcast.

And when it came to discussing Elliott, the former Reds forward insisted that he made all the difference at Old Trafford with his attitude and ability to create.

“I think Harvey’s form this season has been absolutely outstanding. I think he’s such a clever player. He makes things happen in the final third, he sees things. And he gave everybody a lift when he came on. The subs have done that all season. The attitude was there from him to make things happen and of course he wins the penalty and he plays some good passes as well trying to make things happen,” Mellor said.

Elliott will be hoping to make a push in the final games to start in the midfield and make more of an impact.

At the moment, Jurgen Klopp seems to go with the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz ahead of him.

However, given his impact in recent weeks, Klopp could well decide to go with Elliott from the start in the run-in.
