Shooting on N.J. street leads to car crash and foot chase, cops say

Two men were charged with various gun crimes after a shooting in Gloucester County ended with a car crash and a foot chase over the weekend.

Paulsboro Police responded to the 100 block of Adams Street around 1:45 p.m. Saturday for a report of gunfire and were told someone fired shots at an SUV driving down the street, according to court documents.

The SUV crashed into another vehicle and was disabled, police stated in an affidavit of probable cause filed with the charges. The shooting was caught on surveillance video, police said.

The four occupants fled the SUV on foot and three of them were carrying guns, police said.

Officers allegedly spotted one of the men, Jazmere L. Hopps, 21, of Camden, running from the scene with a gun and ordered him at gunpoint to get on the ground, police stated in an affidavit.

Hopps complied, but allegedly got up and began running again, prompting officers to tackle him and take him into custody, police said.

No injuries were reported from the incident.

Hopps was charged with second-degree counts of unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and resisting arrest.

Anthony L. Mason, 21, of Camden, was not carrying a firearm as he ran from the SUV, police stated in his affidavit. But, Mason had earlier possession of a handgun that officers located in the SUV, authorities said.

Mason was charged with second-degree counts of unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and certain persons not to have weapons because of a prior conviction. He was previously convicted of unlawful possession of a handgun, police noted in his complaint.

Both men are jailed pending court hearings. Court records did not list attorneys for the defendants as of Monday morning.

Authorities were continuing to look Monday for the other two suspects who ran from the vehicle and the person who fired shots at the SUV, said Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of Detectives Tom Gilbert.
