Predicted Leeds United XI to face Sunderland: One change as Daniel Farke makes Patrick Bamford decision

Leeds United host Sunderland this evening in the first of five remaining cup finals in the race for automatic promotion.

The Whites will be looking to return to winning ways after being beaten for the first time in 2024 on Saturday at Coventry City, as they missed the chance to move ahead of Ipswich Town after their defeat at Norwich City.

Farke has only one new fitness concern heading into the match but it is a big one, with Ethan Ampadu having been labelled a doubt yesterday due to illness.

He did also suggest that neither Connor Roberts or Willy Gnonto are yet fit enough to start, despite the fact both came off the bench at the weekend after recovering from their respective injuries.

Here is out predicted XI for the final match under the Elland Road lights this season.

Goalkeeper

Illan Meslier could have perhaps done better for Coventry’s opening goal on Saturday but still keeps his place in the starting XI.

Defence

Ampadu has been unable to train in the two days since Coventry, and his availability will depend on whether he comes through today’s session.

The 23-year-old will be desperate to play given what is now at stake, and is likely to partner Joe Rodon at the back, despite Farke’s concerns.

Junior Firpo looks set to continue at left-back, but there could be a change on the other side. With Roberts unlikely to start, Sam Byram should come in at right-back.

Jack Clarke gave Archie Gray a tough time back in December and given how Byram dealt with Hull City’s Jaden Philogene recently while not fully fit, should come into the side for his defensive security.

Midfield

Ilia Gruev got just over an hour on his return from injury on Saturday and should be fit enough to continue in the middle.

With Byram at right-back, Gray should come into the midfield to partner Gruev after Farke admitted Glen Kamara was withdrawn at half-time on Saturday due to tiredness.

With Gnonto not fit enough to start yet, Dan James looks set to be on the right again, and he will need a big performance after a disappointing display on Saturday.

Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville were also below their best, but Farke does not seem keen to go away from what has worked for so long at this stage.

Calls have been growing even more since Saturday for Mateo Joseph to start, though Patrick Bamford will probably get the nod after what Farke said about him in his presser yesterday.

Predicted XI: Meslier; Byram, Rodon, Ampadu, Firpo; Gruev, Gray; James, Rutter, Summerville; Bamford
