‘Not extravagant’: Andy Townsend says £12m Arsenal player is ‘such a smart footballer’

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are dreaming of winning the Premier League title this season, but the Gunners will face a tough challenge when they come up against Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal will take on Tottenham Hotspur in the North London derby later this month. The Premier League game between Spurs and the Gunners will be held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham are not in the race for the Premier League title, but Ange Postecoglou’s side are in a good position to end up fourth.

Just like Arsenal, Spurs need the three points from the North London derby. And, just like Arsenal, Tottenham will see a draw in the match as a defeat.

Arsenal are at the top of the Premier League table at the moment. The Gunners are on 71 points, the same as Liverpool, who are second.

Arsenal midfielder described as ‘brilliant’

On talkSPORT on Tuesday morning, former Tottenham forward Alan Brazil and ex-Chelsea player Andy Townsend were looking ahead to the North London derby.

While analysing the midfield options for the two teams, Townsend noted what Jorginho does for Arsenal.

The talkSPORT pundit has outlined how smart and clever the £12 million (Sky Sports) midfielder is when Arsenal are in a winning position in matches.

Townsend said about Jorginho on talkSPORT (7:42 am, April 9, 2024): “To be fair, Jorginho, right, he is not the quickest, and I worry sometimes a little bit about him when he is sitting there, but he is such a smart footballer.

“If anyone looks like they are going to get behind him, he will foul him, knocks him to the floor and pick him up.

“He is just very clever. When they are in a winning position, he is brilliant because he is always available for the ball and keeps it, not extravagant with his passing, he rarely gives it away.”

Arsenal have a big decision to make on Jorginho’s future

Jorginho is out of contract at Arsenal at the end of the season. There is an option for a further year.

The Italy international midfielder’s agent has already mentioned two clubs who would be interested in signing him as a free agent in the summer transfer window.

Arsenal have a really big decision to make on the future of Jorginho.

The midfielder is 32 now. While it would be harsh to say that the former Chelsea star is past his prime, we have to note that he is not going to get much better and will not fetch a decent transfer fee in one or two years.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has publicly said that he is very happy with the 32-year-old.

Arteta has often used the Italian star in big matches. It shows how much the Arsenal boss relies on him and what he thinks of him.
