Sitting with your legs crossed is a dangerous habit you must break, warns chiropractor

It’s a common habit most of us do without realizing, but professionals strictly advise against crossing your legs while sitting.

Unlike chronic cheek biting – another common habit – which is anxiety or depression induced, crossing your legs has nothing to do with your mental health, although it’s linked to several physical damages.

Why you should never sit with your legs crossed

Dr. Suzi Schulman from TikTok has shared a series of things she would never do as a Chiropractor and sitting with her legs crossed at the knee is among them.

When you sit with your legs crossed, the pelvis tilts, thus “cutting all the signals down the leg”.

This interferes with digestion, according to the TikTok famous chiropractor, while other medical reports highlight a few more concerning reasons to avoid crossing your legs while sitting.

According to Healthline, placing one leg over the other or putting your ankle over the knee is said to spike blood pressure. While the increase is temporary, people suffering from high blood pressure must avoid crossing their legs at all times.

Furthermore, it can contribute to poor posture for the reason we mentioned above. Constantly tilted pelvis can cause discomfort and pain in the lower back, and also lead to a “misalignment of your spine over time.”

You should also avoid

Here are a few other things Dr. Suzi Schulman would never do as a chiropractor and you shouldn’t too.

  • Never sleep on your stomach as it forces you to turn your head to one side, cutting the signal between the brain and the body the entire time you’re asleep causing “tension”.
  • Never wear a heavy bag on one of the shoulders as the weight can force a curve into the spine causing problems related to the neck, and spine, headaches, focusing issues, and more.
  • You should also never sit with your wallet in your back pocket as this causes your pelvis to tilt, as a result of which the entire spine has to compensate. Indulging in this habit for years can cause early wear and tear and arthritis throughout your spine.
