Report: Michael Edwards is now interested in 'unstoppable' winger to replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool

Liverpool reportedly have a new target this summer, who they see as the club’s ideal Mohamed Salah replacement.

Michael Edwards’ decision to return to work under FSG as the club’s new head of operations makes Mohamed Salah’s situation very interesting at Liverpool.

The Egyptian has been breaking records once again in the Premier League and reaching new heights. However, Liverpool must also assess the reality of his situation.

Salah turns 32-years-old this summer. He will have just one year left on his contract. It is moot that with Edwards now at the helm, he would be open to offering Salah the extension he wants and deserves.

Edwards has also been known as a shrewd businessman and someone who has maybe at times been reluctant to give long-term extensions to older players.

We may be proven wrong, and Edwards may decide to extend Salah’s contract. However, at this stage, a potential departure this summer cannot be ruled out.

What Liverpool will be looking for in finding Salah’s heir this summer

Even if Salah stays, Liverpool are going to have to proactively continue their search for a long-term successor to his throne.

Salah will not be around forever, and ideally Liverpool should be looking to bring in a young exciting option who will not only compete with him for minutes but also provide competition.

A player who has a high ceiling but is already performing at a high level in European football and ready to make the step-up to Anfield.

There aren’t many options like that, but there may be someone who does tick those boxes who Liverpool are reportedly looking at.

Who is Nico Williams? And why do Liverpool want him?

According to the latest reports, Liverpool are interested in Athletic Bilbao winger, Nico Williams. Sportlens have reported that the club sees Williams as a potential replacement to Salah.

Williams is a 21-year-old Spanish international who has made 20 goal contributions in 30 appearances for Athletic Bilbao this season.

He is right-footed and has predominantly played on the left-wing for Bilbao, so it is difficult to see how he would be a replacement for Salah who is left-footed and plays on the right.

However, he is extremely talented. His brother, Inaki, has previously described him as unstoppable.

“In one-on-ones, he is practically unstoppable…He is a talent, a rough diamond that needs to be polished,” Inaki Williams said. (via Mundo Deportivo).

Nico has also recently addressed transfer rumours surrounding his future. He is definitely one to watch.
