Alan Shearer hails 'dangerous' Arsenal star despite criticising him for 'joke' incident

Arsenal strolled to a 3-0 victory away at Brighton on Saturday in impressive fashion, but the game was not without controversy.

The Gunners opened the scoring with Bukayo Saka converting a penalty after Gabriel Jesus was fouled, which sparked some debate as it was claimed that Tariq Lamptey’s foul on the Brazilian was soft.

The referee John Brooks correctly awarded the foul, but he did have a busy day throughout and was subjected to a lot of vocal frustration from the Brighton crowd.

He faced another incident during the game, when Ben White and Brighton defender Pervis Estupinan clashed, and this riled up the home crowd even further.

White dramatically fell to the ground clutching his throat after Estupinan had lightly touched, him and this moment was dubbed “a joke” by Premier League legend Alan Shearer. However, the former striker did then praise the Arsenal defender for his performance.

Alan Shearer praises Ben White for performance vs Brighton

Shearer selected White in his Premier League team of the week, and highlighted his strong display in both defence and attack.

“White showed why he’s been a key figure in Arsenal’s imperious backline by giving Brighton no joy down his side. He also put in some dangerous crosses,” he claimed.

White was again excellent against his former club, helping Arsenal keep another clean sheet whilst limiting the home side to just two shots on target, and on current form, he is one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

White has been a standout performer for Arsenal, and his performance against Brighton showcased why he is excelling as a right-back.

His confidence on the ball helped Arsenal progress forward, and he set Saka up with an excellent chance in the early stages of the game.

He did have sloppy moments, completing just 71% of his passes, and a lot of Brighton attacks did come down his side, but he still helped keep the opposition at bay, and they struggled to deal with his forward passes to help release the front three.

White has evolved into a key player for Mikel Arteta, and despite his ongoing situation with Gareth Southgate over his England place, has now become one of the best players around in his position.
