‘Let’s not get carried away’: Manchester United fans told to temper hype over their rising star

Manchester United were not at their best against Liverpool at Old Trafford, but Erik ten Hag’s side still managed to hold Jurgen Klopp’s team to a draw.

Liverpool headed into the Premier League match against Manchester United at Old Trafford this past Sunday as favourites.

After all, the Reds have/had the better team and are/were in better form. But, United managed to hold the Merseyside club to a 2-2 draw.

Liverpool had a lot of chances and should have won the match, but they needed a late penalty from Mohamed Salah to salvage a point.

Kobbie Mainoo has become an important player for United in recent weeks, and manager Erik ten Hag included him in the starting lineup.

Manchester United fans sent a message about Kobbie Mainoo

Mainoo was deployed in holding midfield alongside Casemiro. The 18-year-old England international midfielder scored a brilliant goal midway through the second half. One pundit compared him to Luka Modric.

The teenager has been widely praised for his performances for United this season, but former Old Trafford star Paul Ince has urged the fans to be calm about the rising star and not get carried away.

Ince said on talkSPORT when asked how good Mainoo is: “He is okay. He is okay. Let’s not get carried away.

“This is the problem. I actually personally, there was a time when he gave the ball away, and to be fair, Fernandes ran back 60 yards, shut out a shot, and Onana pushed it past the post. No one said a word to Kobbie Mainoo.

“If that had been me or Keane, he would have got absolutely roasted because you can’t give the ball away in those positions. And he did that.

“Yes, he scored a great goal, yes, he is still young, yes, he has got potential to be a very, very good player, but let’s not go over the top, let’s not go over the top. As I said, he is still still young.”

Kobbie Mainoo needs to stay focused

While I think that Paul Ince is being a bit too harsh on Kobbie Mainoo, I do believe that the Manchester United midfielder needs to stay focused and continue to develop his game.

Mainoo is only 18 now and is not the finished article yet. He has to improve his game and has to become better.

This is Mainoo’s breakthrough season. Opposition teams are still learning about him. Next season could be tougher for the rising United star.
