‘To tell you the truth’: Liam Lawson now shares the latest update on his Formula 1 future amid RB rumours

Red Bull Racing and Visa Cash App RB reserve driver Liam Lawson has been the subject of plenty of rumours about his future over the past few weeks.

Talk that he could replace Daniel Ricciardo as soon as the Miami Grand Prix have been dismissed by his management team, but a return to the Formula 1 grid might not be too far away.

Speaking on the F1 Nation Podcast, the young Kiwi explained what he knew about the situation and whether we’ll see him in an F1 car again soon.

Liam Lawson addresses rumours surrounding his future

The Japanese Grand Prix appeared to be the perfect opportunity for Daniel Ricciardo to bounce back from a tough start to the 2024 season.

Despite handing his car to Ayumu Iwasa for FP1 and not being able to follow a run program in FP2 due to the weather, Ricciardo looked very lively in qualifying.

He was just five hundredths behind teammate Yuki Tsunoda and qualified 11, one place behind the hometown hero.

However, Ricciardo’s start to the Grand Prix in Suzuka couldn’t have gone more badly and after a slow getaway, he tangled with Alex Albon trying to avoid Lance Stroll and ended up in the barriers.

His teammate once again shone and scored another point for RB with Ricciardo forced to watch on from the garage with Liam Lawson watching over his shoulder.

Another failure won’t do the Australian any favours and Lawson has now addressed the rumours surrounding his future.

It would be a shock if the 22-year-old wasn’t on the grid in 2025 after his phenomenal cameo last year.

The question for the Red Bull group is deciding who he might replace next season.

Lawson coy about his prospects of racing in F1 this season

In a short interview on the F1 Nation Podcast, journalist Tom Clarkson asked: “What about your position in the team? There are so many rumours going around this paddock Liam.”

Lawson simply replied: “It’s unfortunately just rumours at the moment so, honestly, to tell you the truth, I have absolutely no idea.”

Even if Liam Lawson knew if the recent rumours about his future were true or false, it was unlikely that he was going to give too much away.

Other figures in Formula 1 are backing Lawson to be on the grid soon.

Former driver and team principal Christijan Albers has admitted that he doesn’t understand why Lawson is in a race seat yet.

Even his current team boss Laurent Mekies has admitted that he’s in a very frustrating position this year.

Helmut Marko has addressed this too, but it doesn’t appear as though there’s going to be an immediate driver change on the grid yet.

Could Liam Lawson leave the Red Bull group?

While the current rumours surrounding Lawson’s future involve a step up into the RB team, other teams on the grid might be taking a closer look at him.

He has previously refused to rule out leaving the team if it meant getting his first full-time opportunity in F1.

Lawson was linked with Williams at the end of last year when speculation surrounding Logan Sargeant’s future wouldn’t go away.

Those rumours might crop up again soon with the American failing to make an impact during his second season with the team.

While F2 star Andrea Kimi Antonelli has been linked with the role, if Mercedes aren’t keen to allow the Italian to leave, Lawson would be a very strong alternative.

Stranger things have happened in the Formula 1 driver’s market…
