Brush fire near Newark airport sends dark smoke high in the sky

A brush fire along the east side of the New Jersey Turnpike in Elizabeth sent large plumes of dark smoke into the sky near Newark Liberty International Airport Tuesday afternoon.

“There is a large brush fire in Elizabeth that is creating a large smoke column visible over the westside of the city,” Bayonne’s Office of Emergency Management posted on X. “For commuters, you may experience delays on the NJTP.”

It was unclear Tuesday night what caused the fire or if it was under control. A spokesperson for the New Jersey State Police did not immediately return a message with questions.

Air traffic at Newark Liberty International Airport was not impacted by the fire, according to a report from ABC7, and a post on X from the airport said the fire was off of airport property and the Elizabeth Fire Department was responding.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection sent out a news release Tuesday asking for the public to be vigilant during the hight of wildfire season from March through May.

The agency shared information on how to prevent wildfires as well as new tools to share real-time information about incidents and their status, including online dashboards and trackers.
