Rival Premier League club's chief executive has just claimed Everton should have been deducted more points

The wider footballing world has largely garnered sympathy for Everton, as they continue to be pegged back by their own division.

The Premier League has been severe in their administration of various sanctions this season, yet such a process has been long, drawn-out and frankly unfair to all those involved in the relegation battle.

However, for some to suggest that the likes of Luton Town are somehow worse off than the two sides that have actually been punished is ludicrous, and one myth which needs dispelling.

This latest rant is unlikely to do that though.

Luton Town CEO Gary Sweet makes bold Everton claim

Speaking to BBC Sport just yesterday, Gary Sweet, the Luton Town CEO, actually offered his powerful verdict on the recent spout of points deductions.

And despite his side having seen his side face a 30-point deduction over a decade ago, he has no sympathy for these sides.

In fact, he has even lobbied for further sanctions, noting: ‘If you look at the Forest four [points] – which I was also disappointed with – two points off for co-operating is ridiculous.

‘You should have had two point added if you didn’t co-operate – it should have been six.

‘This is Everton’s second time, albeit a smaller level – so it should certainly be a greater amount, but it is not for me to say how many that should be.

‘As a club that has gone through a 30-point deduction for something I see as relatively less, then it is somewhere between the two. It has to be a punishment level that is a real deterrent.’

Luton Town don’t deserve to profit from Everton’s misfortune

Whilst many continue to make the point that the Hatters are being hard done by due to the unpredictable nature of this situation, they are not the victims here.

After all, if anything they are fortunate to have been promoted into a season where such unrest is being wrought by the Premier League, for years gone by.

The three-year rolling periods that both Everton and Forest have been tried and punished for consisted of years where Luton Town were nowhere near the top flight.

So, to suggest that a further points deduction is in order is quite laughable really, just because they suffered in the past.

If any research had been done, it would become quite clear quite quickly that the Toffees are being punished too harshly if anything.

Sweet should just be glad that his team have been handed a lifeline, and a last-gasp opportunity to drag themselves to safety.

After all, were it not for these deductions, the writing might already be on the wall for his side.
