'Can be top': Lescott says Man City have a serious talent in £200k-a-week man after seeing him v Real Madrid

Manchester City drew 3-3 with Real Madrid last night in the Champions League – Joleon Lescott believes one star is set to become a top player at the Etihad Stadium.

A frenetic contest at the Bernabeu ended all square, with Pep Guardiola fairly pleased with the result considering how the game went.

Real Madrid went 2-1 up after conceding early doors to a clever Bernardo Silva free-kick, but City got their noses back in front in the second-half after brilliant strikes from Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol.

City couldn’t quite see out the game, as Fede Valverde bagged a late equaliser, but 3-3 at the Bernabeu can never been seen as a bad result.

City were not at their best, but it was another very good evening for Josko Gvardiol, who scored his first goal for the club in some style – and Joleon Lescott reckons the club have a top player on their hands…

Just recently, Gvardiol seems to have turned a corner for City.

He enjoyed probably his best outing to date in the 0-0 draw with Arsenal, and then followed that up with a solid performance against Aston Villa.

He was forced off at half-time against Crystal Palace, but came back last night against one of the best teams in the world and picked up where he left off – and for that, he deserves a lot of credit.

£200,000-a-week star Gvardiol faced some criticism earlier in the season which was never really that fair. But Lescott reckons City are sitting on a serious talent.

He said on TNT Sports after last night’s game: “I think he can be top. I think he’s always learning and improving. The Arsenal game was probably his best performance recently. But tonight will do his confidence the world of good having scored.

“(It was) a solid game. I know he potentially could have done more for the third goal but overall, he wasn’t at fault for anything and he’s been consistent of late.”

Gvardiol will become a world-class player

This was another superb outing from Gvardiol, who is really starting to shine now in City colours after a tricky period earlier in the season.

He signed for the club for a huge £77 million fee which naturally brings about a lot of pressure. He has also been tasked with playing out of position all season.

So the earlier criticism of him has perhaps been a little overboard, but it’s brilliant to see him really impressing now.

There is no doubt that City are sitting on a serious talent here. Gvardiol’s technical quality and use of the ball are extremely impressive, but he’s getting better and better defensively and he can definitely reach a world-class level eventually.
