Derby County injury latest and expected return dates with nine updates for Wycombe clash

Derby County have a number of injury concerns as they prepare for a huge clash against Wycombe in League One.

The finishing line is in sight and Derby County need four wins from their final four games to confirm promotion from League One. It’s far from easy though, given the challenges in the division, which starts against Wycombe Wanderers.

The Chairboys have made life tough for the Rams whenever they’ve faced off, and will be looking for more of the same after their Wembley heartbreak in the Bristol Street Motors trophy final over the weekend.

With that in mind, one influencing factor on the result could be the team available to Derby head coach Paul Warne. There are a number of injury issues plaguing the squad as the manager looks to chop and change his side.

With that said, here’s a look at the latest Derby County injury news ahead of the clash with Wycombe.

Derby County injury list

Derby County currently have an injury list that consists of four doubts and five ruled out for the clash against Wycombe. On the doubts front, Max Bird, Tom Barkhuizen, Callum Elder and Joe Ward are all facing a late test of fitness.

Meanwhile, Craig Forsyth, Tyreece John-Jules and Dwight Gayle are ruled out but expected to make a return before the end of the season. Jake Rooney is stepping up his bid for fitness, but Ryan Nyambe is out for the remainder of the campaign.

Joe Ward injury latest

Joe Ward provided two huge goals for Derby in their clash with Portsmouth last time out, helping the side towards an important point. The wing-back was withdrawn in the second half, following a knock to his knee, which will require some assessment before he is deemed clear to face Wycombe.

Max Bird injury latest

Max Bird is nearing a return to action after the midfielder picked up a muscle injury in early March. There are doubts over whether he will make the squad travelling to Adams Park, though the academy graduate seems one of the closest to returning from a spell on the sidelines.

Tom Barkhuizen injury latest

Tom Barkhuizen picked up a calf knock in the clash with Bolton, forcing him to be substituted at half-time. The forward is nearing a return though and could be involved against Wycombe on Wednesday night.

Expected return date: Wycombe Wanderers (A) – April 10.

Callum Elder injury latest

Callum Elder has struggled with an injury-hit season so far, with the latest issue being a groin tweak against Bolton. The left-back is a doubt to face Wycombe and it remains to be seen if he is involved in the squad.

Dwight Gayle injury latest

Dwight Gayle was another player put through the physical test of Bolton, which resulted in a first-half substitution due to injury. The striker is on the sidelines, but there is an expectation that he will return before the end of the campaign.

Expected return date: Cambridge United (A) – April 20.

Craig Forsyth injury latest

Craig Forsyth picked up a calf injury following the clash with Bolton, which has since kept him out of action. The defender is also expected to make a return before the end of the season, but is still a few weeks away.

Tyreece John-Jules injury latest

Arsenal loanee Tyreece John-Jules was expected to be out injured for the rest of the season, following a serious hamstring issue against Reading. Paul Warne has since hinted at a return for the striker before the end of the season.

Expected return date: Carlisle United (H) – April 27.

Ryan Nyambe injury latest

Ryan Nyambe injured his quadricep muscle late in the game against Charlton, which forced him off. The right-back has been ruled out for the rest of the season as a result, with a return likely to be back for pre-season.

Expected return date: Pre-season 2024.

Jake Rooney injury latest

Jake Rooney has been on the long road to recovery from an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury in his knee that he picked up earlier in the season. Plenty of progress has been made, to the point where the youngster could return to training.

There is still a long way to go before a full return to action, which is likely to be pre-season.
