Newark and Sherwood United’s league run of ten unbeaten in the Premier Division North of the United Counties League ended by league champions Sherwood Colliery

An impressive unbeaten run stopped at ten league games in a row as Newark and Sherwood United were bested by competition champions Sherwood Colliery in the United Counties Premier Division North.

It was all action in the first half for the hosts who welcomed the Newark Highwaymen to their ground by scoring four in the first half before the visitors managed to claw one back to make it 4-1 at the final whistle.

Tom Jones hit the response for Newark and Sherwood United in the 65th minute thanks to a lovely ball from man-of-the-match Toby White.

Under Romaine Graham’s guidance, Newark and Sherwood United enjoyed an unbeaten streak that saw them climb the ranks and solidify their position as a team to be reckoned with as they sit in a respectable 11th position out of 18 teams.
After the match Graham said: “It was a tough day at the office, especially the first-half.

“We had some good opportunities and if the lads take them then it is a different game.

“As we were playing against better opposition, you really have to take the chances or you will get punished.

“Sherwood Colliery know what they are doing and are a very good team.

“Their side has been together a few years as well and that shows.

“It was an avalanche first-half.

“We will down tools for a couple of weeks now and then it is preparing for next season with some friendlies.

“We are going to examine how we shape the team moving forward.

“I just got all the lads from the pitch and despite this result, we have been in class form.

“This is a journey and this is just another stepping stone.

“Every team gets hammered occasionally and we have experienced that.

“We know the hurt that brings and we don’t want that to happen again.

“The focus is on the future.

“One, two or three games unbeaten can be luck but when you put ten in a row on the record books it shows real skill.
“I am really looking forward to seeing how this team goes as we move forward.”
