WhatsApp: Changes to the popular messenger from 11 April

Due to the new EU regulations, Meta has changed its terms of use and privacy policy for WhatsApp Messenger. The company has announced on its own FAQ website.

What’s changing on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is changing some rules due to the updated EU directives regarding the Digital Service Act (DSA) and the Digital Markets Act (DMA). These include new conditions regarding the messenger principles and guidelines that describe what is and is not permitted on the platform.

It will also soon be possible to send messages between WhatsApp and supported third-party apps, such as competitor messengers, which also complies with EU regulations. WhatsApp also describes clearer definitions of the new options for reporting inappropriate content to the operator.

As far as international data transfer mechanisms are concerned, WhatsApp will, in future, rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework for users in the EU, which is intended to ensure compliance with data protection regulations.

WhatsApp is also changing the minimum age for using the app in the EU from 16 to 13. In this way, WhatsApp can ensure that a standardised minimum age for using the messenger applies worldwide.

“If you choose to use Channels, we’re explaining how we apply the Channels Guidelines, how you can report content and appeal decisions, and how channels are recommended.” added the firm.

All messages continue to be end-to-end encrypted.

When do the new terms come into force and what do I have to do?

The new terms of use of the messenger will come into force on 11 April 2024. If you continue to use the platform after this date, you accept these changes without further action.
