'I think': Alan Nixon drops 7-word Derby County verdict when asked who will clinch 2nd in League One

Journalist Alan Nixon has predicted whether Derby County will win promotion out of League One this season.

Derby County travel to Wycombe Wanderers tonight aiming to re-establish their four-point cushion inside the automatic promotion places.

That fixture was rescheduled as Wycombe lost against Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy final this weekend while Derby watched Bolton Wanderers creep to within touching distance by beating Bristol Rovers.

The gap between the Rams and third place remains a point, but a win over the Chair Boys tonight with Bolton set to play Portsmouth on Saturday could prove to be a massive moment in their season.

A nerve-shredding and exciting climax to this League One season awaits, and although the pressure weighing on the players is enormous, Corey Blackett-Taylor has revealed the dressing room is feeling calm.

Calmness has reflected in their recent performances, with Paul Warne‘s men winning five of their last seven matches in the league.

Derby County supporters will love Alan Nixon’s prediction

Journalist Alan Nixon shares a similar calmness and confidence to Blackett-Taylor by making a prediction that Derby supporters will love.

He wrote on X: “I think Derby win all their games…”

Nixon’s prediction, although a bold one, is very understandable as the Rams are difficult to stop when it clicks.

Warne’s men have pieced a four-match winning run on two occasions this term, with their most recent coming in March as Derby secured wins over Port Vale, Bristol Rovers, Reading and Bolton.

It would be perfect if they could round off their season with an invincible run to seal second position in League One and promotion to the Championship.

However, history suggests that getting over the line is the hardest part.

Derby County’s previous promotion struggles

Following their relegation from the Premier League in 2008, Derby spent 14 years in the Championship.

For most of that time, the Rams were fighting near the top end of the division, but despite finishing in the playoffs on four occasions, were never promoted back to the promised land.

A last-minute winner from Bobby Zamora broke supporters’ hearts in the 2014 play-off final while a semi-final defeat to Hull City followed in the 2015/16 campaign.

Derby suffered further heartache on two more occasions, losing to Fulham in the 2018 semis before making it to the final under Frank Lampard in 2019, only to get beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa.

Previous history suggests Derby can ill-afford to let the lottery of the play-offs decide their fate this season and must get promoted automatically. A win against Wycombe tonight would go a long way to achieving that.
