Local media hail 8/10 Southampton ace for one 'delightful' thing he did v Coventry City

Southampton picked up their first victory since returning from the March international break, as they defeated Coventry City 2-1 at St Mary’s Stadium.

Russell Martin called for a reaction after their goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers on the weekend and that is exactly what he got.

It was a positive Saints showing – particularly against potential playoff opponents – and one that could build some much-needed momentum.

There were a number of standout performers on the night, namely the goalscorers Kyle Walker-Peters and Che Adams.

But, one Southampton ace was praised for doing this ‘delightful’ thing, which caused the visitors all sorts of problems.

Manchester City loanee Taylor Harwood-Bellis has enjoyed a stellar season on the South Coast and has looked every inch of a Premier League player.

It’s become pretty evident that he’s a product of City’s academy, as on the ball, there are few better than him.

That notion was only amplified last night as local media hailed his assured presence in possession.

“Looked assured at the back next to Jack Stephens. Played some delightful balls over the top which created chances on goal,” Daily Echo journalist Alfie House wrote.

“Headed down for Che Adams’ second of the evening. Did lose a tussle with Ellis Simms, but Bazunu saved the resulting effort.”

A look at his incredible statistics and it’s easy to see why House awarded him an eight-match rating, with no player scoring a higher mark.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ incredible stats v Coventry City

Harwood-Bellis produced almost the complete centre-back display last night, as his incredible Sofascore stats evince.

  • 88% accurate passes
  • 2 key passes
  • 3/4 duels won
  • 3 clearances
  • 2 tackles
  • 1 interception

Martin will be desperate to secure his signature in the summer, though, his £20m buy option only becomes an obligation if Southampton gain promotion.

Having performed so well this term, if they fail to go up, he’ll likely have a number of top-flight suitors ready to launch proposals.

So his future on the South Coast will likely rest on these next few weeks, as a play-off campaign awaits.

Southampton are back in action on Saturday afternoon, as they welcome 14th-placed Watford, who have only lost one of their last six games.

They must take all three points and continue to build the momentum.
