'Brilliant' player who Gerrard sold for £3.5m says he's 'coming to support the Villa' against Chelsea

An Aston Villa player, who Steven Gerrard sold for £3.5million, will be in attendance for the Villa Park clash against Chelsea at the end of April.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side head to the West Midlands on Saturday, 27 April, in what could be a crucial game for the hosts.

Unai Emery’s men are now out of the top four after Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday evening.

Ange Postecoglou’s side also have an all-important game in hand, which means Villa’s European fate is now out of their control.

One former player who will be in attendance at Villa Park is Anwar El-Ghazi.

The 28-year-old plays for Mainz in Germany and took to X on Wednesday to answer an Aston Villa fan’s question.

“Definitely, mate! Coming to support the villa against Chelsea home,” he wrote.

El Ghazi left Villa Park in 2022, signing for PSV Eindhoven for a reported fee of £3.5million.

What did Anwar El Ghazi say about Steven Gerrard?

El Ghazi wasn’t afraid of opening up on his Villa Park exit when Steven Gerrard was in charge.

“I’m always the guy who looks at myself first, so when things go wrong I’m not blaming anyone ever,” he told The Athletic in 2022. “But last season, I should have had more chances.”

“In the first training session under Gerrard, he was trying to explain with his assistant manager on the pitch how he likes to play. A lot of thoughts were already in my head. I knew I had to get ready to not be wanted.”

He added: “I was trying to adapt to the way that he plays, and of course, I can do it, but naturally, I am a winger. I like to stay wide, put crosses in, get into one-on-one situations, and maybe come inside. But he wanted you to start inside. It was different.

“That’s what I struggled with, and I think Bertrand Traore and Trezeguet (other wingers Villa moved on) did, too.”

It’s a shame how things ended for the Egyptian at Villa Park. He clearly had more to give and was certainly at an age where he could’ve been an essential cog in Gerrard’s system.
