Video: Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen makes horrific mistake in the Champions League, it cost his side a goal

Ian Maatsen is currently the only player who is associated with Chelsea who is taking part in the Champions League this season.

However, the loanee made a key error in Borussia Dortmund’s quarter-final tie tonight against Atletico Madrid that actually cost his side a goal.

Opportunities were few and far between for Maatsen in his first season as a first teamer at Stamford Bridge in the opening months of the campaign.

This is despite him being arguably the most impressive player during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States, where they went unbeaten against some serious opposition.

In the face of no gametime, the Dutchman made the move to Germany, where he has quickly shown the talent a number of Chelsea fans knew was there all along.

However, on the big stage of the Champions League quarter-final first leg tonight he made a dreadful mistake that actually cost his side a goal in the opening minutes.

In an attempt to play out the back, Maatsen miscued a pass across his own goal, teeing up Rodrigo de Paul for an easy finish.

His side were defeated 2-1 in the first leg, keeping their chances alive at progressing to the next round and facing either Barcelona or PSG.

Chelsea looking to cash in on Maatsen

Reports have stated that the Blues are keen to cash in on Maatsen at the end of the season, with them needing to sell before they buy again in the summer.

He is one of a number of homegrown players those high up at the club are willing to part ways with in order to balance the books as far as Financial Fair Play goes.

Armando Broja is another on loan who is likely to leave, with Trevoh Chalobah and Conor Gallagher players currently with the first team who could be sold to make funds available for signings.
