Report: Newcastle United now want 14-assist midfielder likened to Andrea Pirlo after Steven Gerrard missed out

Newcastle United will be looking to add another midfielder this summer regardless of how the future of Bruno Guimaraes plays out.

The Magpies have been restricted in terms of their transfer business of late and that may mean selling a big name this summer.

Alexander Isak has been linked away from St James’ Park but David Ornstein believes an exit is unlikely.

Ornstein does though think that the sale of midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is a little more of a possibility amid strong interest from elsewhere.

Newcastle therefore need to have midfield targets in mind, especially after Sandro Tonali’s lost debut season.

With that in mind, Newcastle are now looking towards the Dutch market ahead of the summer transfer window…

Newcastle United want Joey Veerman

iNews now claim that Newcastle are interested in signing PSV Eindhoven midfielder Joey Veerman this summer.

It’s suggested that Newcastle have scouted the Dutchman ahead of a possible summer move.

Veerman has racked up 14 assists in all competitions for PSV this season as well as chipping in with six goals.

The 25-year-old has been a driving force for PSV as they close in on reclaiming the Eredivisie title.

Rafael van der Vaart has compared Veerman to Andrea Pirlo, hailing his ‘delicious’ passing ability.

One interesting note for Newcastle is that Veerman is represented by the Muy Manero agency – the same agency who represents Sven Botman.

That existing relationship with Muy Manero may just help Newcastle’s cause if they do launch a move for Veerman this summer – and they will be hoping for better fortunes than Steven Gerrard.

Steven Gerrard missed out on Veerman

Seeking big additions at Al-Ettifaq in January, Gerrard made a move to bring Veerman to Saudi Arabia.

Muy Manero agent Nathan van Kooperen told ESPN earlier this year that both Al-Ettifaq and Zenit St Petersburg made bids to sign Veerman in January.

However, Veerman stayed with PSV, seemingly keen to at least see out their push for the Eredivisie title this season.

Perhaps Veerman would be more open to a transfer this summer and Newcastle would back themselves to have a better chance than Al-Ettifaq.

Veerman is expected to feature for the Netherlands at Euro 2024 this summer and Newcastle would be wise to try and put the wheels in motion for a move before he features at that tournament, where he could potentially attract even more interest and see his value explode.
