Fabrizio Romano addresses rumours Liverpool want to try and sign ‘superstar’ Real Madrid forward

Liverpool are starting to look ahead to the summer transfer window with a new team in place.

In terms of FSG’s newly appointed CEO of football Michael Edwards, it’s very much a case of ‘back to the future’ at Anfield.

But with Edwards now working with sporting director Richard Hughes, there’s a fresh feeling to Liverpool’s recruitment. A new manager will only add to that sense.

As a result, it seems unlikely that the Reds will be going back in for any former targets. It’s time to wipe the slate clean and start again anew with transfers.

So, with that in mind, it comes as no real surprise that journalist Fabrizio Romano has today ruled them out of returning for a player who turned them down in the past.

No chance for Liverpool and Rodrygo

The player in question here is Real Madrid forward Rodrygo Goes. There have been some interesting stories flying around in regards to the Brazilian and Liverpool this week.

Rodrygo confirmed himself that he had the chance to sign for the Reds back in 2019. On his way to Europe from Santos, the Brazilian says he turned Liverpool down in order to sign for Madrid.

And with recent reports claiming that the Reds could be interested in trying again for Rodrygo this summer, journalist Fabrizio Romano has decided to clear the air. It’s not going to happen.

“Rodrygo also spoke about having the opportunity to join Liverpool earlier in his career, but there’s nothing more to say about interest from the Reds now – Rodrygo is obviously well known by everyone these days as he’s a superstar scoring goals,” Romano said in his Daily Briefing this morning.

“I’m sure probably all the clubs in the world would like to sign him, but there’s zero happening on that front at this stage.

“His full focus on Real Madrid, with a new deal signed a few months ago which includes a €1bn release clause.”

Who could Liverpool sign instead

In all honesty, this didn’t really need saying. A move to sign a player like Rodrygo isn’t the way Liverpool tend to work in the market. Especially not now that Edwards has returned.

Instead, we think it’s more prudent for Liverpool to focus on finding the ‘next Rodrygo.’ The Reds may have missed out on the Madrid man five years ago, but FSG’s plan to take over another club could help them find the next best thing.

The American owners are reportedly keen on snapping up a side in order to foster potential talent for the Liverpool first-team.

If that plan comes to fruition, it should hopefully mean that the club are better placed to beat the likes of Madrid to exciting youngsters. As far as it ‘Goes’ for Rodrygo though, that ship has well and truly sailed. And we’re fine with that.
