Enzo Maresca should drop Patson Daka and start £7.5m Leicester player for the run-in - opinion

Leicester City have five crucial games of the Championship season remaining and there is little room for error in this incredible automatic promotion race.

Enzo Maresca‘s side fell to a 1-0 defeat away at Millwall on Tuesday evening and struggled to carve out any meaningful chances until the final stages.

They huffed and puffed for much of the affair but lacked a real spark, it was almost as if Saturday’s late winner against Birmingham City zapped most of their energy.

Anyhow, they did manage to create a big chance in stoppage time after great work down the right from Dennis Praet, but Patson Daka squandered the golden opportunity.

The Zambia international has been profligate in recent weeks and seems to be lacking confidence in front of goal.

With that said, Maresca should drop Daka in favour of his £7.5m ace.

Since mid-February, Leicester have suffered five league defeats and have looked some way of their usual standards.

Wastefulness has been their main issue, with forwards missing a number of glorious chances to win games.

Daka, most notably, has been snatching at shots, so Maresca should consider dropping him out of the side for Tom Cannon, who for whatever reason, has hardly had a look in.

The Foxes signed him last summer from Premier League outfit Everton after his impressive loan spell at Preston North End the season prior.

Since arriving in East Midlands, the 21-year-old forward has started just three league games, one of which he netted a brace in.

Whilst he lacks experience compared to the aforementioned Daka, he seems to be more composed when an opportunity arises and is a natural finisher.

Further, in his substitute appearances, he’s always linked the play nicely and has shown the ability to play out on the left, which is useful when Stephy Mavididi tires.

Enzo Maresca doesn’t seem to trust Tom Cannon

Maresca hasn’t even named Cannon in the matchday squad in the last four games, with his last involvement coming in the 2-2 away draw at Hull City last month.

Even then, he didn’t feature, he was an unused substitute despite City needing a winning goal heading into the final 30 minutes.

The Italian head coach, speaking back in March, noted that he can’t name all of his forwards in the squad.

“We have four strikers, one of them has to be out,” he told BBC Radio Leicester.

Cannon certainly finds himself in a tricky position but with Daka misfiring, he may be handed an opportunity against Plymouth Argyle on Friday.
