'Personally': Genoa sporting director makes claim about how Djed Spence is training after joining on loan

There was a feeling at Leeds United that Djed Spence did not have the right attitude for Daniel Farke’s side, and that is behind the decision to rejoin Tottenham Hotspur – before joining Genoa on loan.

Spence, 23, moved on loan to Leeds – following Joe Rodon after the duo spent time on loan at Rennes in France before going back to Spurs and then to Elland Road. But he played just seven times for Leeds.

He left under a bit of a cloud. Injured after his first outing and missing three months, he then played six more times – mostly on the left. Reports claimed he left because he disagreed with Leeds boss Farke.

It is even claimed that Spence arrived late to a meeting with Farke in which the Leeds boss was to inform Spence he would be having his loan terminated. He has since moved to Genoa, where he is impressing.

He has since played nine times for Genoa. The Serie A club have the option of buying Spence for a fee of £8m at the end of the season. It has been a tough couple of years for him, playing six times for Spurs.

It is unclear if Genoa will take up the option to turn Spence’s loan deal into a permanent one – with question marks continually arising around the player’s attitude. Ange Postecoglou wasn’t impressed.

Now, Genoa’s sporting director Marco Ottolini has told Caught Offside that Genoa are in talks with Tottenham about a permanent deal to land Spence – and that he likes Spence, and his attitude in training.

What Marco Ottolini has said about Spence’s future at Genoa

Ottolini said to Caught Offside: “We still have seven games to go and we want to see what he can do. Personally, I like Djed and how he is doing, and how he is training. He can do more, and he knows this.

“But we are in contact with Spurs and will evaluate a deal over the next few months giving us time to understand our both position and Djed’s perspective on potentially staying here,” Ottolini continued.

Spence has no future at Tottenham with Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro firing on all cylinders under Postecoglou this season. The fact he has a cheap-ish permanent option suggests he will be on his way.
