Report: Arsenal now want to sign 'incredible' £17m man who was playing for Liverpool last season

Arsenal seem likely to sign at least one new central midfielder this summer as Mikel Arteta and Edu aim to keep progressing.

The Gunners have been linked with some household names to bolster the central midfield department, amid doubts over the future of Jorginho at the Emirates Stadium – the Italian’s contract expires in July.

Arsenal are believed to be keen on signing Bayern Munich No.6 Joshua Kimmich – while there are also rumours about Arteta wanting to trigger the £53m release clause of Real Sociedad No.4 Martin Zubimendi.

Now – however – a new midfielder has entered the scene for Arsenal

Arsenal want Arthur Melo

Well, a cheaper midfield option has now emerged in Arthur Melo.

A story by Tutto Juve in Italy claims that Arsenal are keen to sign the Brazil international this summer after Juventus put him up for sale.

The Italian news outlet believe Juventus are willing to accept just €20m (£17m) to offload Arthur – which would represent a significant loss for the Serie A outfit, who signed the South American in a £72.5m deal from Barcelona back in June 2020.

So far this season, the Brazilian has impressed on loan at Fiorentina, making 20 starts in Serie A as he enjoys a far more productive campaign compared to last term.

Arthur spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Liverpool, where he made just one appearance – lasting only 13 minutes – in what was a nightmarish season riddled with injuries.

However, the 27-year-old now seems to have rediscovered his best form on loan at Fiorentina, making Arsenal sit up and take notice.

Tutto Juve add that West Ham and Everton would also like to sign Arthur this summer.

Gunners have wanted 27-year-old for years

Arsenal have actually resurrected their interest in Arthur.

Back in January 2022, the Gunners pushed to sign the man from Goiânia on loan from Juventus, and the midfielder – who has been called an “incredible” footballer – was open to joining, according to the Guardian.

Arteta and Edu appeared to move on following Arthur’s struggles at Juventus and Liverpool, although his excellent loan spell at Fiorentina this season seems to have reignited Arsenal’s admiration.

Of course, the Gunners could still sign a top midfielder like Kimmich or Zubimendi as well this summer – the £17m asking price for Arthur should hardly prove prohibitive for a club of Arsenal’s stature.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as anything could happen.
