‘I can see that’: Paul Merson says ‘outstanding’ manager could succeed at Liverpool, not Roberto De Zerbi

Liverpool are on the hunt for a new manager to succeed Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.

Jurgen Klopp has decided that he will step down as the Liverpool manager when the current campaign ends.

Liverpool chief Michael Edwards is leading the hunt for a new manager after recently returning to the club.

It is not going to be easy to find a suitable successor to Klopp. The German is one of the best managers in the world and is a Liverpool legend.

Under Klopp, Liverpool have won the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. The Reds have become the main challengers to Manchester City.

Paul Merson has given his take on the managerial situation at Liverpool. The former Arsenal star and Sky Sports pundit has named the manager he thinks could do a good job at Anfield.

Merson has praised Brighton and Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi, but he does not think that the Italian, who is on the radar of Juventus, is ready to take charge of a club such as Liverpool.

The Sky Sports pundit believes that Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim would be a very good appointment for the Reds.

Amorim, 39, has been in charge of Sporting since 2020. He led them to the Portuguese league title in 2020-21. Sporting are at the top of the league table at the moment.

Paul Merson comments on Ruben Amorim vs Roberto de Zerbi for Liverpool

Merson wrote in SportsKeeda: “As for Roberto de Zerbi, I think teams have caught on with the way Brighton play. I’d have been surprised if he got the Liverpool job, they need someone who is winning football matches week in and week out at the top level. If Liverpool drop points, there will be headlines in the newspapers.

“Ruben Amorim on the other hand – I can see that. What he’s doing with Sporting is outstanding, he’s working under severe pressure and delivering. I don’t think that’s the case with De Zerbi. He’s still a good manager but I don’t think he’s ready for a massive club yet.”

How Liverpool view Ruben Amorim

Ruben Amorim is one of the best young managers around, and Liverpool rate him highly.

HITC revealed this week that Liverpool view Amorim as the leading candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.

Talks between Amorim and Liverpool are taking place, but there is no agreement in place between the two parties at the moment.

The Sporting manager himself has said that he is focused on Sporting for now and does not have an agreement with anty club.
