‘If Unai Emery fancies it’: Stan Collymore tells Aston Villa to sign 21-year-old player this summer

Aston Villa have some really good central defenders on their books at the moment.

Pau Torres, Ezri Konsa, Diego Carlos, Tyrone Mings, Clement Lenglet, Calum Chambers and Kortney Hause are the centre-back options available to Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.

While Villa are not as mean defensively as Arsenal, they have conceded fewer goals than West Ham United, Newcastle United and Chelsea in the Premier League.

However, there is always room for improvement. Villa have had injury problems at the back. Lenglet is only on loan from Barcelona, while Chambers has not featured much this season.

Conceding three goals against Brentford, losing 4-1 at Manchester City and getting hammered 4-0 by Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park are just three recent results that show that Villa need to do something about their backline for next season.

Former Villa striker Stan Collymore has suggested a Luton Town defender as a potential target for the Villans in the summer transfer window.

The pundit has noted how good Teden Mengi has been for Luton since joining them from Manchester United in the summer of 2023.

The 21-year-old English defender has made 23 starts and two substitute appearances in the Premier League this season. He has scored one goal in those games.

Mengi has made the fourth-highest interceptions in the Premier League this season.

Luton Town defender Teden Mengi told he’s good enough for Aston Villa

Collymore wrote about Mengi in CaughtOffSide: “Sure, he’s not long left Old Trafford to ply his trade at Luton but I can’t be the only one who’s noticed that he has all of the background, the ambition to leave United at 21 to go it alone.

“I’ve been really impressed by his performances and I’m sure he’ll be on several ‘big clubs’ radars.

“He’s played for England at every age level so will have had an A+ club and international grounding. Personally, I’d drive him to Villa Park tomorrow if Unai Emery fancies it.”

Teden Mengi could leave Luton Town

In my opinion, Teden Mengi could leave Luton Town at the end of the season if the team get relegated to the Championship.

Luton are third from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment.

Even if Luton stay up, it is hard to see them turn down a big offer for Mengi, who himself could be tempted to make a move to a bigger club.
