'Fantastic': Son Heung-min shares what he really likes about Newcastle United this season

Tottenham Hotspur take on Newcastle United on Tyneside on Saturday in the opener of this weekend’s Premier League clash, and Spurs captain Son Heung-min has been talking ahead of the game.

A crucial match for both sides in the race for European football. Spurs sit ahead of Aston Villa in fourth now, but only ahead on goal difference. Fifth place is supposedly set to promise Champions League, too.

In sixth, Manchester United remain in pole position. West Ham sit seventh, but have played a game more than Newcastle and Erik ten Hag’s side. Newcastle are eighth, two behind United in the race for sixth.

With fifth promising the Champions League, sixth will mean Europa League. Liverpool winning in the Carabao Cup will mean seventh is Europa League, and that could see 8th mean the Conference League.

The race for Europe is hotting up as Spurs face Newcastle

Newcastle then, are right in the mix of pushing for European football – albeit, not the Champions League. Europa League remains a real possibility and with seven games left, they need to go on a run of form.

Newcastle need a win at St. James’ Park, Spurs need to maintain their position. It all means for a fantastic open to the weekend’s fixtures – and Son has told TNT Sports just how impressed he is with Newcastle.

Spurs beat Newcastle 4-1 in London, back in December. But the last time Spurs went to Newcastle, The Toon went 5-0 up after 20 minutes and went on to win 6-1. Son says Spurs are a very different side.

What Son has said about Newcastle ahead of Spurs clash

“The last time we faced Newcastle we were not the same team as now. Unstable, many issues. We have to be really strong. Tough place. Newcastle are a strong side. I like the way they play, with fantastic players.”

A win for Tottenham, with Villa going to Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, pretty much secures their place in fourth – given Spurs have a game in hand over fifth-placed Villa. For Newcastle, possible Europa League.

A win for the Toon drags them into sixth if results go their way and given the injury-hit season Eddie Howe has had at Newcastle – that would be an incredible achievement. Massive, in the race for Europe.
