Jury convicts 2nd man in double fatal shooting in N.J. city

A jury has convicted a second man in a shooting that left two people dead in Cumberland County nine years ago.

Following an 11-day trial, jurors convicted Sheldon M. Goldsborough Sr., 44 of Vineland, on Friday in the March 8, 2015 killings of Damian Mills, 22, and Kevin Peterson, 20, in Vineland, according to the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office.

Police responding to West Grape Street that day found a vehicle occupied by four people, prosecutors said. Mills was pronounced dead at the scene, while Peterson died later at a hospital. A woman in the vehicle was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg and the fourth occupant was not injured.

Evidence recovered at the shooting scene, including DNA found on a cellphone, led investigators to co-defendant Michael R. Loftin, 28, of Ohio, who was convicted of first-degree conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison last year.

The investigation found that Loftin and Goldsborough were together at the time of the homicide, that Goldsborough’s cellphone pinged a cell tower near the crime scene and that a cell number linked to Goldsborough called Loftin’s phone around the time of the shooting, prosecutors said.

The jury convicted Goldsborough on two counts of first-degree aggravated manslaughter, one count of first-degree conspiracy to commit murder and one second-degree count of aggravated assault.

Goldsborough is jailed pending sentencing, which is scheduled for June 3.
