Jersey City to pay couple in Uber that was struck by city vehicle $350K in lawsuit settlement

A Jersey City couple injured in a crash with a Jersey City Parking Authority vehicle more than four years ago will receive $350,000 from the city in the settlement of a lawsuit.

Jose Del Carmen de Los Santos Gonzalez and his wife, Maritza Santos, were passengers in an Uber ride-share vehicle in the area of Baldwin and Newkirk avenues when it collided with a Jersey City vehicle driven by Taylor C. Allen on Nov. 9, 2019, according to a lawsuit filed in Hudson County Superior Court Dec. 23, 2020.

Santos Gonzalez and Santos suffered “serious and permanent physical injuries, suffered, still suffers and will continue to suffer from great physical pain and mental anguish ... and will in the future be obligated to expend large sums of money for medical and other needed care,” says the lawsuit, filed by South Amboy-based attorney Karim Arzadi.

In 2021, Allen became a Jersey City firefighter.

The case was dismissed Nov. 14, 2023 after a settlement was reached. The Jersey City City Council is expected to vote on the settlement agreement at Wednesday’s meeting.

A $500,000 settlement with retired Department of Recreation employee Dan Wiley in his discrimination lawsuit, and an $80,000 settlement of a lawsuit in which a then 14-year-old bicyclist fractured his forearm when he struck a raised sign stump vicinity of Ocean and Bayview avenues and fell off his bike are also expected to be approved.
