"He could": Oliver Glasner suggests he might use Crystal Palace player for the first time against Liverpool

Oliver Glasner has now hinted that he could use one Crystal Palace player for the first time against Liverpool on Sunday.

The Austrian is still getting to grips with his squad since replacing Roy Hodgson in February, experimenting with Joel Ward as a centre-back while even using David Ozoh in that area against Bournemouth, as the 49-year-old examines his options.

There have been a few who Glasner has been unable to start, such as Michael Olise, Marc Guehi and Cheick Doucoure – with the latter two still sidelined – although there is a forgotten man who could make an appearance for Crystal Palace against Liverpool…

Oliver Glasner suggests he could use Jairo Riedewald for the first time

Well, it is Jairo Riedewald who could make his first appearance under Oliver Glasner at Anfield on Sunday.

The Dutchman is yet to play a single second of football for the man from Salzburg, having been injured ever since his appointment.

Riedewald has not made an appearance since the 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday 17th January, and has only made four Premier League appearances all season.

Now – however – the Netherlands international could get a rare outing on Sunday.

Glasner is quoted by Crystal Palace’s official website as saying: “We have no new injuries, but Jairo is coming back. He trained the whole week with us and he could be in the squad on Sunday.”

Decision to make for Crystal Palace

Riedewald has timed his return to fitness well, as he really needs to prove his value to Crystal Palace in these final seven Premier League games.

The 27-year-old sees his contract expire in July, and given his lack of football this season, he is presumably among those Steve Parish plans to let go this summer, as things stand.

Therefore, it will be a significant end to the 2023/24 campaign for Riedewald, who might have already kicked his final ball for Crystal Palace if Glasner decides against playing him in any of these final seven matches.

The man from Haarlem has always performed well when called upon, and is something of a fan favourite amongst Crystal Palace supporters, so hopefully, he can earn a new contract before July.
