'Big shout-out': Robbie Savage says £17m Spurs player has been among the Premier League's best this season

Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a bright season and remain firmly in the driver’s seat to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

Ange Postecoglou has done an outstanding job since taking the reins of a Spurs side that finished eighth in the table last year.

Tottenham were early pace-setters in the Premier League and currently sit fourth in the table, with a spot in the Champions League within sight.

A combination of great tactics, solid man-management and some shrewd acquisitions in the transfer windows have helped turned Spurs’ fortunes round.

One particularly shrewd signing was that of Guglielmo Vicario, who had some big shoes – and gloves – to fill after Hugo Lloris expressed a desire to leave Tottenham.

Spurs signed Vicario from Empoli for £17million and, while the move was met by a mixed reaction, it didn’t take long for the Italian to win the fanbase over.

The 27-year-old has been so good for Tottenham that Lloris’ absence has barely been felt, and his efforts have helped Spurs remain in top-four contention.

What has Robbie Savage said about Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario?

And now, Robbie Savage has given Vicario a “big shout-out” as an honourable mention among his picks for the league’s best keepers.

Savage, writing in The Mirror, went with Arsenal’s David Raya as his pick in goal for his XI in the season, but was eager to also praise Vicario and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.

“Big shout-out to Guglielmo Vicario, who has had a good first season at Tottenham, and Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez,” wrote the former Wales international.

Admittedly, as good as Vicario has been, there has been one flaw in his game, namely his strength during set-piece attacks and opponents overpowering him.

However, this is just his maiden season in the Premier League, and he’s been amazing for the most part. His shot-stopping and distribution have been superb.

With regards to Vicario’s strength and dealing with danger from set pieces, no doubt he’ll work on it in pre-season to ensure his second campaign is even better.
