Cambridge United head coach Garry Monk believes that today’s 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic is further evidence of how far his side has come in recent weeks.
After falling behind to Connor Wickham’s first-half goal, the U’s battled back after the restart and secured themselves a share of the spoils courtesy of a strike from former Charlton frontman Macauley Bonne.
And as far as Monk is concerned, he felt that it was a game his team would have lost not so long ago.
“In the first half at both ends of the pitch we were losing those battles so we spoke about that half-time,” said Monk, who takes his side to Bristol Rovers on Tuesday night with a six-point gap to the Sky Bet League One relegation zone.
“But in the second half I felt we came out on top in terms of winning those battles, the individual battles and the second-ball battles.
“The biggest compliment I can pay them (the players) is if you go back four or five weeks ago, a goal like that in the first half, maybe we’d have suffered mentally and not come back from it.
“You can see the difference in them mentality, especially in the games in the last few weeks. The mentality is there to fight and the determination is there.
“Overall I know we always want the three points but I think it was a fair result.”
