Cambridge United striker Macauley Bonne has revealed that the jeers he received from the travelling Charlton Athletic fans helped to spur him on to score the equalising goal in today’s 1-1 draw at the Cledara Abbey Stadium.
The striker, who joined the U’s on loan from Gillingham in January, left the Addicks for a second time last summer under somewhat of a cloud – something that was centred largely around a social media post.
And the Charlton supporters in the South Stand certainly made Bonne fully aware of their feelings from the first whistle, booing his every touch.
However, he got the last laugh with a low strike that earned United a crucial point in their bid to secure Sky Bet League One survival.
“It’s always going to be there now. They said some things, I said some things but that’s football and things happen,” said Bonne, whose goal was his first in a Cambridge shirt.
“There’s some Charlton fans I really get on with, but there’s some that came today to boo me.
“One hundred per cent (it spurred him on). I got it in the warm-up and it was boo, boo, boo. I just thought ‘you know what? Keep doing it because any minute it’s going to come back and bite you’.”
