'You are not going to win': Les Ferdinand says Spurs couldn't cope against £13m Newcastle player today

Tottenham Hotspur fell to an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Newcastle United in Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off at St James’ Park.

Spurs went into the game against the Magpies hoping to tighten their grip on fourth place, but instead were swept away by Eddie Howe’s charges.

Indeed, Tottenham lost so badly to Newcastle that they slipped out of the top four on goal difference without Aston Villa kicking a ball.

The Magpies scored their first on 30 minutes as Alexander Isak latched on to Anthony Gordon’s pass, cut inside and fired past Guglielmo Vicario into the low corner of the net.

Newcastle then made it two just two minutes later as Gordon left the usually reliable Micky van de Ven in his wake before finishing emphatically into the Spurs net.

The in-form Isak then grabbed his second of the match in the 51st minute, racing onto Bruno Guimaraes’ long pass and making no mistake with his finish.

And as a cherry on top, Newcastle made it four in the last few minutes of the game as defender Fabian Schar headed in from Gordon’s corner.

Dan Burn shines for Newcastle as Son Heung-min struggles for Spurs

Van de Ven was not the only usually brilliant Tottenham star who was poor on the day. Captain Son Heung-min also didn’t do well against the Magpies.

The 31-year-old struggled to hold the ball up in the central role and both of Newcastle’s opening goals after he had lost possession.

Son was eventually hooked just before the hour, along with Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Meanwhile, Newcastle defender Dan Burn had a day to remember, the £13million man dealing comfortably with both Brennan Johnson and Son Heung-min.

Les Ferdinand, who played for both Newcastle and Tottenham, noted how “you are not going to win” an aerial duel with Burn as Spurs lumped the ball upfield.

“Spurs have played like this all season, but they haven’t been pressed so aggressively,” Ferdinand told Premier League Productions. “You have to give credit to Eddie Howe for getting his tactics right.

“Newcastle press high and force Spurs to kick long from the goalkeeper, and when you’ve got Son up against Dan Burn you are not going to win the ball in the air.”

The Magpies contingent is rightly buzzing with how their team did against a hapless Spurs outfit. Indeed, it wasn’t far off the 6-1 hammering Newcastle dealt Tottenham last year.
