A woman was caught driving along one of West Norfolk’s busiest roads while more than twice the legal alcohol limit.
Selina Howell, 49, was driving on the A17 from Lynn towards Sutton Bridge in the early hours of February 17 when she was spotted swerving across the road.
She was travelling at a low speed and consistently straddling the central lines, and a member of the public contacted the police.
Officers traced her vehicle to her home address on French’s Road in Walpole St Andrew, and at 3.07am spotted her entering the property through the back door.
She was asked to carry out a breath test, which she subsequently failed, leading to her arrest.
In custody, she provided an evidential reading of 73mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, exceeding the legal limit to drive of 35mcg.
Howell appeared at Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, where she pleaded guilty to drink-driving.
Magistrates disqualified her from driving for 18 months, but offered her a drink-driving rehabilitation course which will reduce that timeframe by 18 weeks if completed within a set amount of time.
Howell will also pay a £120 fine, £48 victim surcharge and £105 in legal costs.
Mitigating, duty solicitor Ruth Johnson said: “Undoubtedly, as perhaps with all cases, there are going to be repercussions from this case of drink-driving.”
She said that Howell normally drives to meet her ex-partner halfway between West Norfolk and the West Midlands in order to see their children, and will have to come up with a solution now she has been banned from the roads.
Ms Johnson said Howell, who works in the hospitality industry, was “incredibly disappointed to find herself in court” and feels “incredibly remorseful” over the incident.
