Impressive Connor Roberts moment before Leeds defeat now looks slightly alarming with hindsight - opinion

On another disappointing day for Leeds United, Connor Roberts was arguably one of the only players who could emerge from the game with any credit.

The right-back came in for a rare start against Blackburn Rovers and looked lively throughout. The Welshman also made an unbelievable challenge on the goalline when it appeared that the visitors were about to take the lead.

It is safe that Connor Roberts was involved in one of the baffling changes Daniel Farke made in the 1-0 loss to Blackburn.

Roberts was replaced by Sam Byram midway through the second-half. And Leeds certainly did not get any better once Farke started using his extremely strong bench. Byram was one of those who made an error for the winning goal.

With that, Roberts should certainly be in the starting lineup against Middlesbrough.

But he was involved in an interesting moment just before kick-off which arguably looks somewhat alarming with the benefit of hindsight.

Connor Roberts showed the leadership Leeds were crying out for against Blackburn

Farke has built his team around a number of key players this season. Six players within the ranks have now made at least 40 league appearances this year.

And yet, when Leeds were waiting in the huddle for Ethan Ampadu to return from his duties in the middle, it was Roberts who was clearly leading the team talk.

Now, it was fantastic to see the 28-year-old take that responsibility. And Roberts did end up taking charge on the pitch, urging Joel Piroe to show more urgency at one stage.

But Roberts was making his second league start since his arrival in January yesterday. It should arguably not have fallen to him to lead the rallying cries.

Daniel Farke must take most responsibility for costly defeat

Leeds then certainly played like a team which lacked leaders. But you could also look at Roberts leading the team talk and point the finger of blame at the manager.

Why has he not used Roberts more since his arrival? And why, when Leeds are seeing some leadership from the likes of Roberts, Ilia Gruev and Willy Gnonto, did Daniel Farke end up replacing all three?

It was certainly hardly surprising that the only goal came after they all came off.

Leeds do have a young squad. And Roberts was promoted out of the Championship more recently than anyone else in the ranks.

But if he is the one who is going to step up in those moments in the heat of the promotion battle, surely Farke should not have waited until mid-April to hand him his second start for the Whites.
