There are now two ‘leading candidates’ to take over from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

Liverpool look to have whittled down their managerial shortlist to just a couple of names.

The Reds have been engaged in a search to find the right person to fill the huge boots of Jurgen Klopp ahead of next season.

It hasn’t been an easy task, with numerous candidates said to have been in the running. But when you’re looking to replace the biggest figure in the club’s recent history, you’re going to want to take your time.

Thankfully, FSG haven’t rushed into a decision just yet. And despite claims today that they’ve already decided on their number one candidate, that appears not to be the case.

In our opinion, we’d be happy to see Sporting’s Ruben Amorim given the keys to the kingdom at Anfield. The 39-year-old is definitely a leading contender. But according to journalist Mark Ogden, Amorim has competition.

Liverpool still considering Roberto De Zerbi

It has repeatedly been said that Amorim is not the only name under consideration by Liverpool. Insiders at the club have reportedly been at pains to stress that.

And speaking to ESPN this weekend, Ogden has relayed the information that he’s been hearing about the Reds’ process. Surprisingly, it seems that Roberto De Zerbi may still be in the mix.

Journalist David Ornstein had previously claimed that De Zerbi should no longer be considered as being seriously in the running for Liverpool.

However, Ogden has now hit back at those suggestions, claiming that the Italian is, along with Amorim, a ‘leading candidate.’

“What I’ve been told is that Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi are the two leading candidates,” says the reporter.

“Now, there were some suggestions that De Zerbi had kind of fallen down the list a little bit. I’m told that that isn’t the case but Amorim is the guy that probably shades the preference.”

Ruben Amorim or Roberto De Zerbi?

Truly, this should not even be a question. De Zerbi once again underlined his credentials for the Liverpool job yesterday by, erm, failing to beat second-bottom Burnley at Turf Moor.

Of course, there are plenty of positives about the 44-year-old. But from our point of view, he’s shown beyond doubt this season that he is not ready to take on a club of Liverpool’s size.

Amorim on the other hand went away to a side battling relegation in Portugal and beat them 4-0. He now looks set to wrap up a second title in four years with Sporting.

De Zerbi does have Premier League experience in his locker, for what that’s worth. But that’s just about the only advantage he has over Amorim. If it’s between these two, then it should be an easy choice.
