'Wow': BBC pundit couldn't believe what 24-year-old Liverpool player did just before the hour-mark today

Neil Lennon was left amazed by what Darwin Nunez did shortly before the hour-mark as Liverpool looked for an equaliser against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Liverpool were punished for a lacklustre start against the Eagles. Eberechi Eze gave the visitors the lead. And Liverpool were thankful to Andrew Robertson for clearing Jean-Philippe Mateta’s effort off the line shortly after.

Those chances woke Jurgen Klopp’s side up. While Palace did threaten on the counter, it was definitely Dean Henderson who was the busier goalkeeper.

He had to make a smart save from Luis Diaz during the first-half. And he made an even better stop in the second-half, from Darwin Nunez on the edge of the six-yard box.

Darwin Nunez leaves Anfield stunned in Liverpool defeat

The ball fell perfectly to Nunez. However, he fired his volley too close to the Palace goalkeeper.

Everything happened so quickly. But speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, Neil Lennon suggested that he could not believe that the Uruguayan failed to score.

“He’s got to score. He’s got the whole goal, he’s just hit it straight at Henderson,” he said.

“Brilliant reactions from Henderson, but wow, that’s the biggest chance of the day by anyone. He’s six yards out, the ball’s bounced up lovely for him, and he’s hit it straight at the goalkeeper. Great save from Henderson, but should have been a goal.”

Striker proving Jamie Carragher’s recent comments correct

It has been well-documented that the striker does miss a lot of chances. Jamie Carragher has recently spoken about doubting whether Nunez will ever be the ruthless goalscorer Liverpool want him to be.

He does so many good things. And you cannot fault Nunez’s attitude. While he is on the pitch, he never gives up.

But there is absolutely no question that that chance was one of several which could have changed the game on Sunday.

However, given just how many brilliant opportunities Liverpool blew against Palace, you really get the feeling that they could have been playing for hours and Henderson would have still ended up with a clean sheet.
