‘Outrageous’: BBC pundit says £26m Aston Villa player was ‘magnificent’ vs Arsenal

BBC Sport pundit Danny Gabbidon has named the Aston Villa player who was brilliant against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Aston Villa are aiming to beat Tottenham Hotspur to the fourth and potentially final UEFA Champions League spot in the Premier League table this season.

Tottenham suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Newcastle United away from home at St. James’ Park in the Premier League on Saturday.

Villa took on Arsenal away from home at the Emirates Stadium in North London in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Gunners, who are looking to beat Liverpool and Manchester City to the title, were favourites heading into the game, but it was Unai Emery’s side who picked up all three points from the encounter.

Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins scored late on for Villa, who were defensively solid and kept a clean sheet.

Praise for Aston Villa centre-back Diego Carlos vs Arsenal

Danny Gabbidon was following the match for BBC Radio 5 Live, and the former West Ham United and Wales international defender was impressed by the display produced by Diego Carlos.

The BBC Sport pundit has noted how good the £26 million (Sky Sports) Brazilian centre-back was for Villa and how he was a rock at the back.

Carlos, 31, had a pass accuracy of 91.2%, took 64 touches, and made two tackles, one interception and three clearances.

Gabbidon said about Carlos on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Diego Carlos has been magnificent for Aston Villa, a brilliant defensive display. He has been in the right place at the right time, so often. It’s outrageous, it really is.”

Aston Villa fans should be excited

In my opinion, Aston Villa fans should be hugely excited about how the season could pan out now.

Villa are fourth now and will now fancy their chances of ending up ahead of Tottenham in the Premier League table.

After all, the win against Arsenal shows just how good they are. Villa could play UEFA Champions League football next season.

The Villans could also win the UEFA Europa Conference League this season. Villa have a 2-1 lead from the first leg of the quarter-final tie against Lille and will fancy their chances of going all the way.
