‘He is having a nightmare’: BBC pundit tears into £34.5m Tottenham Hotspur player vs Newcastle United

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur have suffered a setback in their quest to beat Aston Villa to the fourth spot in the Premier League table.

Tottenham Hotspur have lost 4-0 to Newcastle United away from home at St. James’ Park in the Premier League.

Alexander Isak, who is on the radar of Tottenham’s North London rivals Arsenal, put Newcastle in the lead on the half-hour mark. He scored again in the second half.

Anthony Gordon, who was linked with Tottenham before he moved to Newcastle from Everton in January 2023, found the back of the net for the Magpies on 32 minutes.

While Newcastle celebrated their two goals in the first half, one Tottenham player who was bitterly disappointed was Micky van de Ven.

The Netherlands international central defender, who has been playing well for Spurs this season, was at fault for the first two goals that Newcastle scored.

The £34.5 million (The Guardian) centre-back lost his footing when confronted by Isak for the first goal and hit the turf just two minutes later under pressure from Gordon.

Former Everton and Chelsea winger Pat Nevin was following the match for BBC Radio 5 Live, and he was not at all impressed by the display produced by Van de Ven.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven criticised vs Newcastle United

Nevin said about Van de Ven on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Ange Postecoglou was furious before the goals, Tottenham have had 68% of the possession and you cannot believe that is the case – Newcastle have been so slick going forward.

“Micky van de Ven is a good player, but he is having a nightmare. He either needs to change his studs, do something different or be substituted off.”

Encouraging result for Aston Villa

The defeat for Tottenham Hotspur is a huge result for Aston Villa, who will now be even more determined to win their game this weekend.

The Villans are aiming to beat Spurs to the fourth spot in the league table this season.

Villa will take on Arsenal away from home at the Emirates Stadium in North London in the Premier League on Sunday.

Arsenal will head into the match as favourites, but the Villans will now be doubly keen on getting all three points against the Gunners.
