'I would say...': Jurgen Klopp defends two Liverpool players after Jamie Carragher criticism today

Liverpool might have lost against Crystal Palace today and missed a number of chances but Jurgen Klopp refused to criticise some of his under-fire stars.

The Reds created more than 20 chances but could not take one as Palace’s defence and goalkeeper, Dean Henderson, held firm at Anfield.

For Palace manager Oliver Glasner, it was the perfect away performance and a memorable win so early on in his reign as boss.

For Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, it was a major dent in his team’s title hopes and after being hammered against Atalanta in midweek, capped off a miserable week.

Of course, a number of Liverpool players were guilty of missing big chances.

The likes of Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah had big chances, while Diogo Jota also missed what was basically an open net.

But while Jamie Carragher hammered Nunez for not being good enough in front of goal and insisted both Jota and Salah should have scored their chances, Klopp backed his men.

Jurgen Klopp backs Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Klopp suggested there was little else his forwards could have done to get the equaliser.

“I really don’t know, I couldn’t say that. I would say with the chances we had, we were really unlucky. What could Darwin do with his chance or Mo. Good defending from Mitchell. In the second half, Crystal Palace were lucky we didn’t punish them but that’s why we are stood here with no points and Crystal Palace have three,” Klopp said.

Liverpool have to be better in front of goal

It’s quite amazing really given the forwards they have but Liverpool are just not clicking in front of goal.

Darwin Nunez is a constant problem for both the opposition and his Liverpool teammates. He missed countless chances and the one he smashed at Henderson today simply had to find the net.

Over the years, Mo Salah has been lethal and even on commentary, Jamie Carragher suggested the chance needed to fall for Jota before he also fluffed his lines.

Ultimately, missing chances is what costs teams and in a title race this close, it’s something Liverpool just won’t get away with.

Today felt massive and whoever the new manager is in the summer, might just think getting a proper number nine in to replace Nunez will do the business.
