'Lethargic'... Manchester United FA Cup semi-final opponents get rollicking after 'not running enough'

Woeful form in the Premier League since the international break has placed extra pressure on Manchester United in the FA Cup.

Manchester United have taken just three points from a possible 12 in the Premier League, with draws against Brentford, Liverpool and Bournemouth, and a loss against Chelsea.

Prospects of Champions League qualification look slim, even with a fifth spot up for grabs.

Coventry City results last five games

Manchester United take on Coventry City at Wembley, who reached the last four by beating Wolves in a dramatic game in the quarters.

The Sky Blues form since the international break has been mixed, with a 3-0 loss to Birmingham City this past weekend.

Coventry’s form has been unpredictable with three defeats and two wins since the international break.

This is summed up by a victory over automatic-promotion chasing Leeds, and a defeat against relegation battling Birmingham.

Last season Coventry were the losing play-off finalists, but their inconsistent league form has them placed in eighth, short of this season’s play-off spots by eight points with four games remaining.

Coventry City blasted by manager

Defeat to Birmingham was a disastrous way for Coventry to warm up, and manager Mark Robins was asked whether the upcoming FA Cup semi-final was a distraction for his players.

He was critical of their performance, telling their club media: “It looked lethargic and it looks like that when you’re not thinking properly, we made some really strange decisions where we follow people into areas that isn’t their job and it opens things up for them.

“It wasn’t what we needed, it was exactly what they wanted, and we played into their hands.

“We didn’t work hard enough, and I think that’s the least we’ve run in a game and that’s not good enough.

“I’m not looking for excuses, I’m looking for reasons for it but it’s going to take me some time to get through it because that performance wasn’t what we needed at this stage of the season or any stage.”

Both teams head to Wembley with their seasons pretty much dependent on winning the game. The difference is there is a lot more pressure on Manchester United.

While unpredictable, Coventry are very capable of picking up a win, but it might make United fans slightly less nervous to see that they are not on a relentless winning streak, and come into the game off one of their worst displays of the season.
