Tottenham Hotspur reportedly behind Manchester City in race for £52m playmaker

This has been a pretty terrible weekend for Tottenham Hotspur; a hammering at Newcastle United and Aston Villa pulling off an unexpected win at Arsenal.

Tottenham’s top four hopes took a real battering this weekend and few Spurs fans will be going into work on Monday morning on a high.

At least Villa denting Arsenal’s title hopes provided a silver lining for Tottenham fans.

Saturday was one of the worst days of the ‘Angeball’ era and Ange Postecoglou has plenty to think about.

Yes, Tottenham are only two transfer windows into Postecoglou’s reign and there will be some lows to go along with real highs.

Postecoglou does though need to consider tweaking his approach a little as Newcastle simply found Saturday far too easily.

Reinforcements will be needed this summer as Tottenham look to mould Postecoglou’s squad, and another playmaker may yet be wanted.

Tottenham Hotspur behind in Dani Olmo race

Reports in March suggested that Tottenham had joined the race to sign RB Leipzig playmaker Dani Olmo.

The Spaniard has a £52million release clause in his contract and Tottenham could pounce to land him this summer.

There is now some good news and some bad news regarding Tottenham’s potential pursuit of Olmo.

Reporter Christian Falk has told Caught Offside that Olmo wants a move to the Premier League this summer, giving Spurs some hope.

However, Falk added that Manchester City are currently leading the race for Olmo amid questions over Kevin De Bruyne’s long-term future at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola has hailed Olmo as ‘fantastic’ in the past and City’s interest perhaps shouldn’t be a huge surprise.

City’s status as regular Premier League title winners would difficult for Tottenham to compete with, but there is some hope.

Tottenham convinced Radu Dragusin to snub Bayern Munich for a January move to North London.

Lucas Bergvall then made a similar decision, rejecting Barcelona to join Tottenham from Djurgarden this summer.

Tottenham have shown that Postecoglou can tempt players to the club and wow them with the project at Spurs, but beating City to Olmo seems tricky.

Olmo stats this season

Olmo has hit eight goals and five assists in 22 games this season.

The 25-year-old scored a hat-trick in the DFL-Supercup clash with Bayern Munich back in August, so almost half of his goals this season came in one game.

Olmo did though miss two chunks of the season through injury and has impressed since making his return to action earlier in 2024.

Olmo has bagged two goals and four assists in his last 13 games for RB Leipzig, including a goal against Wolfsburg on Saturday.

Many will know Olmo as a number 10 or left-sided winger, but he has actually spent most of this season playing on the right flank.

That versatility may really appeal to Postecoglou, using Olmo’s creative abilities all over the pitch if he can be lured to Tottenham.

Spurs will be in discussions with RB Leipzig over Timo Werner’s future this summer but may also be looking to snap up Olmo too with the former Barcelona talent thriving this year.
